Do you want to learn to play the piano but not sure where to start? This course in improvisation on piano for beginners is for those who want to experience the freedom of piano playing and at the same time develop basic piano skills.

If you want to create music in the moment and experience boundless music making - then this piano course is for you!

As a beginner you can often be limited to a certain type of learning - either you learn by reading music or by ear. This can easily lead to loss of motivation and joy of playing before you even learn basic piano.

Therefore, it is important to find a balance between improvisation and practice, routine and freedom in your piano playing. That balance is easily achieved by improvisation - one of the most important cornerstones of piano playing joy!

What is improvisation?

  • Composition in the moment
  • Creating of music that consists of melody, harmony and rhythm which are not predetermined
  • Producing music on your instrument or with your voice spontaneously by ear

What do we do during the course

  • We play simple melodies by ear to invent our own musical ideas or put together existing ideas in new ways
  • We let ourselves be inspired by recorded music, poetry, films or works of art in our game
  • We learn to count beats and follow the musical form
  • We learn about pedals as a powerful tool in improvisation
  • We discusses the mental aspect of improvisation 
  • We try free improvisation (to play completely free without trying to follow any instruction, rule or instruction)
  • We improvise on piano in different styles (jazz, funk, rock, samba, reggae, folk music)
  • We learn different types of improvisation and improvisation techniques

No prior knowledge required

No previous knowledge is required for participation in the course! Those who take this course will develop general piano techniques and play a lot of improvisation in different genres individually and in groups.

Freedom in piano playing 

The piano improvisation course will give you the knowledge in practical piano playing but also some insight into the concept of improvisation. Improvisation is a music making process, composition in the moment and the creation of music that consists of melody, harmony and rhythm. During the course, we discuss the mental aspects of improvisation as well as do practical exercises that give you a foundation and basic piano skills. During this piano course, we compare different types of improvisation on piano and listen to examples in different music genres from different eras. We let ourselves be inspired by poetry, films or art.
